A New Beginning

Each year we look forward to Spring with mares due to foal any time onwards from late July. To come across a mare and her new foal for the first time is quite special and for those months of the year no one minds bouncing over the red gibber rocks looking for foals! The Sister Olive Paddock is ideal for the broodmares due to the availability of shelter and the wide variety of feed on hand with access to several dams and troughs throughout it's 135 km2 landscape.

The topography of the paddock comprises of rolling gibber plains dissected by gidgee and the coolibah laden water courses. Sand ridges spread onto the gibbers which in the Winter months grows a variety of herbage plants for the horses.

08 Filly (Music Melody) & 08 Filly (Colourful Music) carry some of the finest campdrafting bloodlines - Acres Destiny*, Doc Freckles Oak*, Dream Lucky Lad*, Stanton Stud Boonluck* & the great Yarranoo Music with the bonus of ASB bloodlines of Juror & Court Martial

Perennial vegetation on the gibber plains is dense as is the numerous gilgais which supports Oodnadatta Saltbush, Bladder Saltbush, Mitchell, Flinders & Button Grass as well as Cotton Bush. This wide variety of food source allows lactating mares & their foals optimum grazing that is sweet and packed with nutrition unobtainable from commercial products. With watering points upto 6-8 km apart, growing foals have plenty of room for bone & muscle development in this paddock.

It is ideal growing conditions for the youngsters as the 'hard country' assists in the strong and healthy development of their skeletal frame through their unrestricted access throughout the Sister Olive paddock.

A journey down the Oodnadatta Track

After 4 years of intense drought conditions on the Oodnadatta Track we decided to move what broodmares we could down to our southern operations, Babbiloora & Mount Penny.

It was a massive undertaking, the first truck load of mares left in June 2008 and the second in January 2009. It took over 24 hours on the road with a rest stop at Bill Willoughby's property in the Flinders Ranges.

All horses will remain in the South East until drought conditions abate but the realisation is that only young horses will go back for a season in the mustering camp where they will get plenty of miles behind behind cattle before entering the competition arena - the days will be hot and dusty but it will be invaluable for these youngsters.

New beginnings at Mount Penny

Spring is such an exciting time for us. With many of our mares carrying the STAR BLACK MINSTRIL bloodlines we are finding that foals by DESTINYS OAK are everything we envisaged when we decided to focus on these particular bloodlines. All foals have the breeding to perform at an elite level regardless of their equestrian discipline. We have bred these youngsters for true versatility without comprimising temperment!
