Glenna - FM ASH. 3543

The GLENNA family has produced so many great performance horses in Australia. A galloway sized mare of good type, standing around 15hh with intelligence and superior levels of agility. It is a combination of these traits that we look for in our breeding mares. Ventry McLennan bought GLENNA from Ted Cousins of Glencoe of the New England area in New South Wales.

The breeding of GLENNA is predominately thoroughbred. This versatile mare was  by BRIGHT FLAME who  was by FLYING CINDERS who was by BLUE FLAME. BLUE FLAME [GB 1924] was imported to Australia and produced the stakes winner, Cid. BLUE FLAME  was by the champion sire PLAHARIS. Interestingly, BRIGHT FLAME  sired many of the top polocrosse horses of the 1950s and early 1960s including a magnificent grey horses called SOLO whom was ridden by Blake Finlayson.

GLENNA is out of DARK NELL who is by DARK FOX, sired by SON IN LAW and out of NELLS PROMISE who is by PROMISED LAND. Otto Baldwin imported PROMISED LAND and stood him in the Manilla area of New South Wales. PROMISED LAND was by a very good sire, DARK RONALD [GB 1905].

As a polocrosse mare  GLENNA played No 1 in A Grade and was extremely difficult to mark. She was also a very good pony club mare and good at jumping. Her first foal, Cobber, who was never registered with the Australian Stock Horse Society, became a top six bar showjumper. She was a tough little mare whose foals were good to break-in  but had to be treated with a great deal of respect.

The Mclennan Connection

Our select group of mares carry bloodlines that are in a class of their own which is a reflection of many years of thoughtful breeding by the McLennan family. Starting with Ventry McLennan, founder of the Yarranoo Stud, and continuing on with son Stuart and wife Nita under their STAR prefix while Ventry's daughter, Maxine Brooks, has retained the YARRANOO prefix. Ventry McLennan was a highly respected horseman and is one that has made a mark on the Australian Stock Horse breed as an individual. He sought and bred a type of horse, generation after generation, to develop a line of horses, particularly females whom were in great demand as broodmares here and abroad.
